Folders

Folders are called so because they can be folded. When these cameras ruled the world of photography, lenses had to be far from the film plane, at their actual focal length. They had to be articulated to remain transportable. It was a success since a 6 x 9cm such camera fits in a (large) pocket.

A 6x9 fits in a pocket.

Folders were built in every format and for every budget, from the very simple Lumière Dialux to the wonderful Zeiss Ikon Super Ikonta 533/16. They disappeared shortly after World War II, when progress realised in fine grain film technology and lens performance allowed 35 mm cameras to win the hearts of both professional and amateur photographers.
